Haitian Support Efforts – An Update
Since the January 12 earthquake in Haiti, it has become apparent that the magnitude of this natural disaster is tremendous. An estimated 3 million people were affected by the earthquake, and the loss of life numbers in the hundreds of thousands. This tragedy has also touched the lives of hundreds of HCR ManorCare employees whose family and friends were lost, injured or displaced.
The commitment to caring of HCR ManorCare and its family of employees has shown brightly throughout this disaster. Within days of the earthquake, HCR ManorCare responded with a financial commitment to a Haitian health-relief organization called Partners in Health. In addition, the efforts of two nurses from MCHS in Plantation and Boca Raton to travel to Haiti on January 17 to provide much-needed medical care were supported through a special volunteer grant award.
HCR ManorCare employees throughout the country have also joined together to show their support for their fellow employees. Employees have collected many barrels of medical and related supplies to be sent to Haiti. In addition, support and caring for employees who have lost a loved-one has taken the form of memorial displays, moments of silence and prayer services at many of our locations.
Upon return from their medical mission in Haiti last week, HCR ManorCare nurses Elsie and Lourdie expressed their gratitude for the company and employee support of their efforts. While in Haiti, the nurses cared for hundreds of injured Haitians, treating numerous head injuries, broken bones and amputations. Elsie was particularly saddened by the children’s amputations because there are no resources for artificial limbs, wheelchairs, walkers or crutches. Elsie sent the following note to convey her appreciation. “Words cannot express my deepest gratitude and sincere thanks. HCR ManorCare truly cares about the welfare of their employees. I am proud to let the Haitian community know that I work for the best company ever.” Elsie expressed that she feels blessed to be part of HCR ManorCare. We certainly feel blessed to have her on our team.
