| Words of Appreciation |
Every day, our centers and hospice and home care agencies receive thanks for the care they have provided to loved ones. Many say they don't have the words to describe their appreciation and simply say, "Thanks." Below is a letter from the daughter of a patient at ManorCare Health Services – Boca Raton, Florida in appreciation of the care provided to her mother.
My mother, Blossom, has been a patient at ManorCare Boca Raton since January 2011. She has dementia and took my father’s car keys last Labor Day weekend while he slept. Unfortunately, she crashed in downtown West Palm Beach, resulting in a complicated fracture of her ankle. While in her first rehabilitation facility, she developed an MRSA infection. Ultimately, her leg was amputated in November and she was then admitted to a second rehabilitation facility for aftercare and therapy. When it was determined that she would require long-term, I chose ManorCare where I knew she would obtain the best physical therapy. She also developed a swallowing issue and required speech therapy, as well. On the day she was admitted, Janet, the administrator, stayed late to make sure my mother settled in that evening and was made comfortable and all her needs were met. She was extremely professional, kind and caring. A rare combination in these facilities. Janet continues to strive to make sure all the residents at the facility have their needs met. Her door is literally always open for them.
I have worked in long-term care facilities since I was in middle school and high school, as a volunteer, pre-med student, medical student and resident. Never did I envision my beautiful, vivacious mother would one day be a patient in one of “those places.” My experiences taught me to treat the patient as if I would want my own parent treated one day. At ManorCare, I have found many employees who obviously share my philosophy. From the front receptionists, to the custodians and engineers, Sal, Michelet and Rick, who always respond quickly and efficiently if the need arises. Gladys, the social worker, is always available for family. The housekeeper Marie (2nd floor) and Penny in inventory supplies, both always wear a smile and show concern for their patients’ needs. I have found very kind and dedicated people who care about the patients, their families and the “community” they work in.
Edilene and Chantal are passionate activity directors and get to know what personal interests their residents have. They love what they do and it shows! My mother’s registered nurses on the second floor are exceptional. Teena runs an incredible floor. Despite being newly hired around the time of my mother’s admission, she seems as if she has been at ManorCare for years. She’s an effective leader and runs a great team with “no attitude.”
Giselle and Andrea need to be training other registered nurses. They are above and beyond any nurse I have worked with during my career. They need to teach others what it takes to be an outstanding, thorough caregiver. Tanesha and Tishann are also extremely professional and competent whenever I require additional assistance. Despite the fact that they may be covering another part of the floor, they always take the time to help.
As for the CNAs, Chlorene, Lula and Paulette are the BEST I have ever seen at any facility in my entire life. Since CNAs are mostly involved with one-on-one care, I have watched as these employees “work” the floor of patients they are assigned to. They are model caregivers, and they give with all their heart. Every patient deserves a caregiver such as these women who give them their all. Micheline and Girlan are also very hardworking CNAs and very responsive.
Jane’s therapy staff succeeded in getting my mother walking with her prosthetic, and Sree was also wonderful in managing my mother’s dysphagia. The dieticians worked closely to help my mother find the right drinks and dietary needs.
While there are others whose names I have forgotten to mention ( just recalled Ella, Crystal, Jay and Amonise), I hope they will all be recognized as part of the nursing staff team of the 2nd floor, as they, too, have always been helpful.
