Neurosurgery Rehabilitation

August is Neurosurgery Outreach Month.  After a surgery the most important thing on your mind is how long the recovery process will be.  Neurosurgery involves the treatment of illnesses via surgery within the central nervous system of the body.  The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord and controls the body’s reflexes; because of this, recovery often involves rehabilitation focusing on both cognitive and physical issues.

Neurosurgery may be required for, but is not limited to, the following ailments: brain tumor, spinal disorders, head injuries, movement disorders, pain, tremors, Parkinson’s disease or vascular disorders.  Treatments for these various disorders range from speech therapy for swallowing and communication problems, occupational therapy for training on activities of daily living and cognitive skill development and physical therapy to improve mobility and balance.  The majority of the rehab patients at HCR ManorCare are discharged within 40 days.  If further assistance is required, additional care or long-term care is available at most locations.

Clinicians use community re-integration activities to aid patients in getting back to good health.  Physical therapy provides a wide variety of interventions to improve functional performance after a neurological procedure, while speech language pathologists provide interventions directed towards speech, language, swallowing and hearing disorders.

Most patients that come to HCR ManorCare facilities after neurosurgery will receive rehabilitation.  Keep in mind, recovery time will vary from patient to patient.  In general, the length of treatment will vary depending on the patient’s health and the nature of the neurological issue.  It is important that treatment is focused on each patient, using an individualized care plan to maximize recuperation efforts.  The care teams at HCR ManorCare centers are skilled in post-acute or post-hospital rehabilitation and their goal is to get patients back on their feet and back to their lives.
