Every May is designated as Global Employee Health and Fitness Month, which urges people in the workplace to observe a healthy lifestyle. According to the Health and Fitness Month website, “Global Employee Health & Fitness Month (GEHFM) is an international and national observance of health and fitness in the workplace, created by two non-profit organizations, the National Association for Health & Fitness and ACTIVE Life. The goal of GEHFM is to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle to employers and their employees through worksite health promotion activities and environments.”
On a perfectly sunny day on May 15, 2013, HCR ManorCare encouraged employees to take part in a walk to celebrate GEHFM and promote a healthier lifestyle. Three separate courses were mapped out through downtown Toledo, OH, each of which began and ended at the corporate office. The courses were of varying length - .5 miles, 1.0 miles, and 1.5 miles respectively – and employees were encouraged to choose the route in which the felt the most comfortable.
Over 100 employees gathered in the main lobby at noon and each were handed a pedometer and a map of the route they had chosen. Members of HCR ManorCare leadership were designated as the walk leaders and gathered their specific groups before the walk began. Once everyone had found their walking groups, reset their pedometers and listened to a few announcements about warm weather safety they were off!
As everyone returned from their various walks they were received by a bottle of water and some fruit. Everyone that turned in the number of steps recorded on their pedometer was eligible for a number of raffle prizes including Toledo Mud Hens tickets and a health and wellness package. When it was all said and done, HCR ManorCare employees walked a total of 321,311 steps to help promote an active lifestyle and a healthier workplace.
